Stencil Paints

I’m a big fan of the solid cream stencil paints, especially of the way they shade and blend. If you’re stenciling an allover wallpaper pattern, they may not be the best choice, but for stenciling motifs on fabrics or free-form stenciling on walls, they’re still my paint of choice. Unfortunately, many of these paints are getting harder to find. Some brands have discontinued them altogether, while others have greatly reduced the colors available. Here’s a guide to which paints are still available, and where you might be able to purchase them.

Spill Proof™ Paint

Spill Proof™ paint is available from Stencil Ease. It’s washable, so you can use it to stencil on fabric, as well as walls, floors, furniture, etc. It shades beautifully and cleans up easily.

Shiva Artists Paintstiks

Shiva Artists Paintstiks are perfect for stenciling on walls or fabric. A solid oil paint in stick form, using them is similar to the solid cream stenciling paints, but they come in a wider variety of colors, including some fabulous iridescents. Readily available at Amazon.com and online art supply stores like Dick Blick.

Easy Blend Stencil Paint

Easy Blend Stencil Paint has been discontinued by DecoArt. Some colors may still be available through online retailers such as eBay. DecoArt’s own online store still lists some colors in their clearance section as well.

Delta Stencil Paint Cremes

These are my favorite stencil paints, but they are getting harder and harder to find online, so you might want to stock up if you come across them in your local crafts store. Bear Woods has some colors on closeout, I found a few colors on Amazon, and there are sometimes listings available on eBay, as shown below:

Plaid Stencil Decor Dry Brush Paints

Plaid discontinued its Stencil Décor Dry Brush Stencil Paints a few years back, making them increasingly difficult to find. Most of the online sources I had shared previously no longer show any stock, so if you really need this paint, your best bet is probably eBay. Alternatively, it may be time to try a stencil paint that’s more readily available, like the StencilEase Spill Proof™ or Shiva Paintstiks.
