"We're really excited," says Laura Ann Johnson, executive director of Friends of Sleeping Bear. "The broadcast will showcase our Track Chair program, which allows visitors with limited mobility to experience the trails. It's a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and give exposure to this beautiful National Lakeshore."
But Zee's connection to Michigan runs deeper than just her professional duties. Her mother, Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft, recently graduated from medical school at the age of 72, possibly making her the world's oldest graduating medical student. This achievement is a testament to the power of determination and a lifelong love of learning.
"It was inspiring to watch my mom pursue her dream," Zee reflects. "She's eternally curious, and her journey serves as a reminder that it's never too late to pursue your passions."
As we delve into the personal side of Zee's story, we discover her unique take on celebrating America's birthday. For her, it's all about the food, with a specialty salad featuring dried cherries, kale, farro, and Castelvetrano green olives taking center stage. And when it comes to fireworks, she has a love-hate relationship, appreciating the tradition but wishing people would limit their use to the actual holiday.
"I'm all for keeping traditions alive, but the summer-long fireworks displays are a bit much for my shelter dog, who gets anxious with every boom," she explains.
And for a 4th of July song, Zee turns to Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA', a song that holds a special place in her heart thanks to her dad's jukebox.
"The smell of that jukebox, the sound of those 45s, it's a memory I cherish," she says.
